The Pursuit of Happiness

The differences between Mountain Climbers and Freedom Fighters go beyond their business lives. When it comes to leisure pursuits, Freedom Fighters exercise their need for independence, whereas Mountain Climbers seek out challenges.

You might find Mountain Climbers challenging them selves by running marathons and white water rafting. Look at the leisure choices of some celebrated Mountain Climbers: Richard Branson has a penchant for ballooning and has risked his life attempting to circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon. Larry Ellison, founder and CEO of Oracle, has competed (and won in 1995) in Australia's Sydney-to-Hobart race, a yachting race so intense that over the past three years, six sailors have died attempting to finish. Ellison is also an amateur pilot. Michael Clark, founder of Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon pursues his interest for boats, but not just any boat—he challenged a team of Norwegian boat builders to build the largest yacht on the planet. After years of experiments, the vessel is now seaworthy and holds the world record for the yacht with the tallest mast. Peter Shea, the owner of Entrepreneur Magazine, not only chronicles the stories of entrepreneurs in the pages of his magazine, but also relaxes like one: Shea spends his weekends racing stock cars at 200 miles an hour.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Kay Koplovitz—the 55-year-old CEO of Working Women Network—enjoys a challenge too. After a hard week, Koplovitz relaxes by altitude hiking and white-water rafting in class-five waters.

These pursuits are not the normal fare of wealthy executives. Mountain Climbers seek the adrenaline rush of conquering a challenge in everything they do. Freedom Fighters, on the other hand, seek out independence in their leisure pursuits. They love individual sports like golf and tennis and enjoy traveling.
