From this point forward, they will always be important considerations as the organization grows. From ten to fifty employees, the accounting system starts to become critical as you struggle to know more precisely if and how which projects, customers, or products are actually making money. From fifty employees or ten million dollars in revenue to fifty million dollars, typically the entire information technology systems need to be upgraded. And above fifty million dollars, you get to revamp them again, as the organization tries to tie all systems to a few if not one common database of customers and employees. The market makes you look either smart or dumb. When it's going your way, it covers up a lot of mistakes. When fortunes reverse, all your weaknesses seem to be exposed. And there's a counter-intuitive aspect of growing a business, where you have a tendency to focus mostly externally when the firm is under ten million dollars in revenue at a time when just a little more...
Ees is a much less sensitive question and can act as a proxy for gross revenue in a pinch. Here's how it works If you really need to know a small business's gross revenue, estimate it by using the rough guide of 100,000 in revenue per employee. So for instance, if a small business has 10 employees, it is likely doing about a million dollars in annual sales.
The normal concept of a day rate drilling contract is in fact suspect. The largest single cost in most drilling programmes is the cost of the rig. The operator would like the well to be drilled as quickly as possible and yet he puts the largest single cost centre on a day rate. The longer the contractor takes to drill the hole, the more money he makes. This is a simplistic view, but reality is not so far removed. It is not in the drilling contractor's interest to increase his efficiency too much. How often have we heard the expression 'We drilled outseives out of a job'
This section discusses the primary azimuth reference systems currently used in directional drilling. This will include True North and Magnetic references with particular detail given to Grid Coordinate systems (i.e. UTM, Lambert, Geographic, and Local). A simple field-proven method is also presented to help avoid confusion when converting from one system to another. More than one multi-million dollar directional drilling project has missed its intended target(s) due to errors and or misunderstandings surrounding the azimuth reference system in use.
An industry survey2 was conducted in order to gain a better understanding of this multi-billion dollar business, which is relatively unfamiliar to many in the construction sector (see Appendix D). According to the survey there are 17 manufacturers of HDD rigs and accessories and several hundred dedicated horizontal directional drilling contractors in North America. The survey results indicated that 60 percent of the contractors surveyed were relatively small companies with annual revenues of up to seven million dollars. Nearly 90 percent of the contractors surveyed stated that they were involved in the utility industry, with 74 percent in the municipal market and 63 percent in the pipeline industry. Environmental applications of directional
Wells under control at a total cost of about 28 million, including pollution control measures. Several million dollars of oil and gas was also burned.2 The cost of restoration operations was estimated at 2.8 million in addition to the 1,8 million for a new platform (the old platform was lost at 5.2 million).
A large percentage of the wells in this country are producing hydrogen sulfide and many are corrosive. In the absence of protective measures, hydrogen sulfide corrosion in these corrosive sour wells costs hundreds of dollars per well per month for equipment failure. This figure varies, of course, depending upon individual well conditions. There are records of this type of corrosion costing in the thousand dollar range per well per month. From these figures it can be readily seen that the cost of replacing equipment alone could be well into the millions of dollars per year for the industry.
Corrosion in sweet oil wells usually becomes serious after the wells have produced for some years, and is associated with high salt water production. Oil wells usually become corrosive when water production reaches 40 to 50 percent of the total fluid. It is estimated that thousands of gas lift wells will become corrosive and could cost the industry millions of dollars per year in corrosion damage.
Drilling contractors like oil companies are in business for one thing only to make money. Oil companies have several ways of making money, but drilling contractors have only one. The contract, therefore, is vital to the contractor's profitability and hence even a mediocre contractor will be very aware of the methods of extracting funds from a contract.
Consider this the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) did a poll asking small business owners what they would do with a sudden profit of one million dollars. Ask some average consumers what they would do with a million dollars and they'll tell you about the exotic places they would visit, the European cars they would buy, and the homes they would build. Yet over 80 percent of small business owners would put that money right back into their companies. People who would forgo almost everything to see their businesses succeed do not take kindly to being referred to as a small anything.
